PostSubject: StarCraft 2 Tweak Guide   StarCraft 2 Tweak Guide EmptyTue May 03, 2011 5:50 pm

Hi guys,
I am running a fairly low spec laptop for starcraft 2 and of course this causes a certain amount of in game lag.
I am always looking at ways at optimizing things and thought i'd start this thread so we can discuss ways of improving our framerate and such.
This won't be much use to high end users but may come in useful for those who either don't have the wedge to upgrade or want to push their existing systems to the limit Smile

Here's some links for tweaking some of the settings in sc2 that aren't normally available from the front end.
http://www.fragworld.org/frag/guides/guides/starcraft-2-tweak-guide.html
http://www.okaygeek.com/blog/how-to-make-starcraft-2-run-faster-with-tweaks-and-optimizat.html

And autoruns, useful for further optimizing windows.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

Cool free optimizer similar to tuneup.

Find malware that most anti virus security completely misses that could cause various issues.

If you have any tips of your own please add them.

Only tips i can suggest are:

keep doing disk cleanup on your PC
defrag often
keep all drivers updated and do windows update every week
scan your pc for virusses often
allways delete stuff you dont need

Its a pain doing these often but surely everyone is capable of doing all of these once a week.

Generally if you keep your pc maintained then it will perform to the best of its ability.

Its hard to say, but by changing the window-mode to fullscreen (NOT windowed) you will rise your FPS extremly Smile

You should pay attention to the autostarted processes and all-time-running processes during your play.
To inspect all autostart-locations in Windows, Microsoft (former sysinternals) offers a tool: AUTORUNS

I know... but this means hooking d3d9 api calls... not so safe.

We all know that THIS is no option. So, by changing the window mode you are cancelling the uasge of Sc2MapPro.

For me i am finding that when i've built up an army of around 160 or so then framerate really becomes a big issue.
Without mapPro even in window mode i can get around 32+ frames per second after some basic optimization which is acceptable but as soon as i switch in mapPro and start building my deathball it drops to around 16fps which is a huge drop.

So much of a drop i have no choice to switch mapPro off when i've built my army as manipulating it becomes too difficult and usually results in so much lag i am not able to lay down accurate emp's or do any real micro. attack move is about it.

mapPro sure is taking an aweful lot of cpu cycles on my puter. Crying or Very sad
if only it could be further optimized it would be great but i guess it isn't worth the time since most punters have powerful setups.

still anything that can be done to grab a few more frames is always appreciated.

Perhaps Admin should take care about a server-client-architecture, so that reading the memory is on the laptop and calculation and/or the GUI is on another PC?

For those who only have ONE PC to play they could use a calculation-server (I would offer one for europe-players).

Hello Dave!

Did you tried to set up a bigger refresh rate?
if yes, probably is something related to windowed mode ( as suggested by theUnknownDead) or something related to a very big alert system file.

hehe i thought my big alert file was responsible but switching it off had very little difference. i was quite surprised coz i really thought it was the culprit too.
the refresh rate slider has very little effect on my framerate. i've tried very extreme settings and the frame rate hardly changed which seems odd.

i must stress this only really starts to happen when i've built up a huge deathball and its easy to switch the bot off at this point since by then mapPro has pretty much done its work for me.

Laughing

ps thanks theUnknownDead, i am experimenting with autoruns. that should keep me busy for a while and help squeeze some more framerate as well as improve my computers overall top end but i don't think it will effect the framerate drops too much with mapPro.

Be careful what you are deactivating! There are some autostarts that allow you to login to windows aso. By deactivating them you will lock out yourself.
If you are uncertain what you can disable, send me a screenshot from the autoruns list, and I will give you some hints and some "don't"s.

cheers theUnknownDead,

i should be fine i am used to playing with the service
dependencies etc and used to keep on top of my puter but lately i've become sloppy and let it slip a bit.

what worries me is even if i manage to raise the overall framerate the fps dropping caused by mapPro isn't going to go away. true it will be slightly lower but a 16fps drop is going to be hard to bring down.

this becomes very clear when i disable the bot and see the fps shoot up.
it would seem on my setup mapPro and lategame don't work very well at all which basically means i need to kill my opponent before that stage or switch off the bot as i am approaching lategame.

I am sorry to hear that.

Perhaps you should invest in a new puter? I think with approx. € 350 - € 400 (ca. $ 518 - $ 592) you can get a good gamer-PC.

Yeah i think that's the only way i can go as i've tried just about everything else now.
In the meanwhile i'll continue optimizing things as it'll benifit just about everything else.

I still play a lot of legit games without mapPro just to keep my hand in and i am well happy with the framerate during those games so its not all bad news.

thanks for the help its appreciated.

I just tested.. Results are suprising for me!
Without SC2 Map Pro at begining of game i have 140-150 FPS, according to FRAPS.. When i loaded SC2 Map Pro with same settings and on same map, my fps dropped to 40-50 FPS at begining of game..
SC2 Map Pro needs to be optimized better for sure!

Strange...

On my old dual core laptop, Sc2MapPro does not take more than 12% of one core cpu usage, and the frame rate is the same.

And yes it could be optimized, but on a normal pc with vertical resync setted on, Sc2 will work at 60 Fps without and with Sc2MapPro.

Finally, we can optimize everything we can but, if you use boost refresh, means that Sc2MapPro thread will be called 125 times in a second What a Face

Im not talking about CPU usage... Im talking about FPS drop which is huge!
that result is without use of boost refresh, and boost refresh is not doing any difference ... Pressing F8 is not doing any difference either.. Pressing F7 is bringing back FPS to normal however!

Here is fraps if you want to test yourself..

The jury is still out on that LiOoO.
You may very well be right.?

One thing is very sure that mapPro is very heavy on its resources and its fair to say if you have a low spec computer then you may find trouble in late game. No amount of user optimization can help.

In summary if you have a high end puter pure brute force will win through but if you puter isn't high end expect severe lag when its enabled lategame.

It's a heavy GPU but the CPU handles the calls

Without a fast CPU the GPU does not matter.

From my experience - faster CPUs are allowing the bot to perform the commands more fluently,
and a good Video allows for those clicks/actions to be performed at game play FPS range. (45fps mark for solid performance)

I did a test.. I just bring all my settings to mid and started replay.. at begining of game FPS was arround 140-150! As the game progresses FPS started to drop and when bot players was on like 150 armies FPS dropped to 40-50 .. I will repeat.. I was just watching replay without SC2 Map Pro...

I tried then a game again.. Battle was me @200/200, enemy was @120/200.. From 150 FPS without SC2Map Pro at begining and arround 40 FPS with turned on SC2MapPro, FPS dropped to 15-20 during battle.. Pressing F7 was increasing FPS back to 40-50 during battle.

During test CPU was not reach to 50% load at all.. It was @30-40% load all the time..

The problem is not Sc2MapPro itself. I mean it's not the executed code.
The problem is the default system that windows uses for transparent widget.
Every time sc2 changes a frame, Sc2MapPro huds will be refreshed with the standard api call for transparent widget for every hud.
I can try to experiment some other way but it's not easy without hooking d3d.

I too have experience this problem, I play SC2 on my laptop with all settings on ultra and without mappro I get around 80 fps; however, with mappro running I get around 50ish max, this would then drop as people mass units for 4s.
